Growing up with a blind mom, I had many friends who told me how lucky I was. I would ask why? They said because your mom can’t see where you hide stuff in your home. HAHAHA!! That was funny! That’s not how it worked in my house. My mom was always on top of checking evey nook and cranny. I am going to make this a two part series as I have a close friend who grew up with me who is going to be writing an article about growing up with my mom and her cleaning!

We learned growing up that things were not hidden when we thought they were. We would clean up the main floor area and mom would come in to check. And EVERY TIME she would use her feet to feel underneath things. And then she would pull it all out. I am the worst one at stacking things nicely underneath the bed or in the closet.

Here is a memory from one of my closest friends growing up on what she remembers it being like picking things up at my house. “Danielle, & I grew up together. I remember going over to her house for various things. Here’s a little bit about what cleaning was like at her house. We learned pretty quick that just because her mother is blind did not mean that we could hide things in the closet and call it clean. Her mom would open the door and check. Plus, I think she knew that we couldn’t possibly have picked it up that fast! She always knew if we did! Laundry was put into the hampers, and then taken downstairs to be sorted. I remember that there were extra hampers to hold whites, etc. those were marked with Braille labels. The washing machine and dryer controls had a raised dot or line to mark the settings.”

Here is a short video of my mom cleaning up my daughters room. This is pretty close to what it was like for me growing up! Hope you enjoy it. Also, check out part two on how blind people clean around the house.
