Kicking off October with Family Traditions. This year has been hard for everyone across the globe. But let’s look for the traditions your family was/will be able to keep. We were able to keep the tradition of having a fire this spring and we are looking forward to the fire ban lifting now that it is October. Even though we do it outside now, it is still fun to have family over and we all enjoy helping keep the fire going while also feeling the warmth it brings.
We love our local baseball team. This year we haven’t been able to be in the stands. But we love going at least once a year for my mom and my birthday usually. It’s fun to listen to the crowd and mom listens to the calls in the radio. Such a wonderful time to spend together. This year she listens at home and I follow along online.
I can’t wait to share more with you tomorrow. One family tradition we have started since my husband and I got married and my brother moved home is Sunday lunch together. Even though now, we live 30 min from church and my brother goes to a church 5 min from our house we all get together and enjoy a nice meal. It is a time to catch up on life. Talk out frustrations of the week and talk about anything we might be doing together over the week to come.
Do you have a special time that you get with family? Do you enjoy time together?
Playing games together. This is an older photo but mom and I took a couple days to Braille up Apples to Apples Junior. It is a lot of fun to have these games. I will share other games we have Brailed later this week. How do you make games more accessible?
My mom used a white cane from the time she was young until she got her first dog in 2006! A white cane isn’t just a way to show someone you have vision loss. But it is a great tool to help you live and indecent life as you travel.
Baking. My mom does not enjoy cooking. Although she’s doesn’t like baking she is really good at it. Her cookies are amazing. Today I got bit by the baking bug and made my own jumbled recipe for creamy rolls with apples inside. They were pretty good. Just needed a bit more sugar. We used to bake cookies and desserts together growing up. Who can resist homemade baked goods?
This year the tradition I look forward to quite a bit has been done virtually. I love going to state and national conventions. Getting to be around blind people and other kids who have blind parents is a great experience. This year it’s all virtual as perhaps will be next year. But getting to be with blind people feels normal. Plus a tradition to be apart of for many years to come.
Turning cards that aren’t accessible in Braille into accessible cards. Here is an old picture of my daughter last year handing grandma her go fish card to Braille so they can play it together. Sometimes this is super easy and other times it might be a couple weeks little bit at a time our family has enjoyed going to a local corn maze this time of year. Mom’s dog enjoys the mystery of the maze. I’m not sure if we will do it this year, but it is a lot of fun.
Last one for this year. Tonight our family is doing trick or treat on Main Street having mom help pass out candy to the kids at the table for my work.
