I am so excited to help you know what blindness is like! And the many ways you can make changes to your everyday life to live as close to normal as possible.

In September I wanted to share Daily life with a blind person. So I thought I would start off with this cute video. This is from a couple weeks ago. We were going to take my sister out for her birthday. My 22 month old took my moms hand from me and said no. He then led his grandma once we got on the curb, around the building to the front. We sat on a bench and he showed her where it was. This is why teaching about blindness matters. I have not spent time training my son how to guide his grandma. But he has been observing since he was born. And now at not quite two he wants to help by leading her. He is short for his age so it’s extra cute his hand barely meets Grams when they walk. But he did a good job!

How does a blind person brush their teeth? I have seen two different ways to do this. One is to use your finger to guide the toothpaste along the bristles. The other way is to put both toothbrush and toothpaste in your mouth and use your tongue to make sure you are getting toothpaste on the brush.

How does a blind person wash their hair? For many years, blind people would either rely on their memory of where the bottles were placed, or use a rubber band or other item put around the bottle to keep them apart. This method is still used by many, some use different shaped bottles for body wash vs. shampoo and conditioner. There is something new coming by P&G , Their Herbal Essences bottles were going to be labeled with lines on the bottom so you would know that shampoo only had a certain number of lines while conditioner would always have another. This is one simple way to know the difference. But as a whole, those who can’t see are still able to shower by themselves with no help. Give it a try: next time you shower turn off the lights and close your eyes.

How does a blind person use a laptop?

Here is a clip of my mom using her laptop with speech to access a file.

How does a blind person choose what to wear? Glad you asked! Here is a video of how my mom knows the colors and ways to match her clothing.

I hope you all enjoyed this topic. We will be sharing more about Daily Life on the months ahead!
